Summer is in full swing, and despite recent downpours, good weather is on the horizon. It's the perfect time to be out on the bank catching carp! Here are our top ten tips for summer carp fishing.
Tip no. 1 - Get There Early
During warm days, carp often spend time near the surface by midday. Arriving at the lake at first light maximizes your chances of spotting and catching fish. Setting up early lets you observe signs of activity and feeding, giving you the best opportunity before the fish settle into their daytime resting spots.
Tip no. 2 - Fish During Low Pressure Fronts
Weather changes, especially low pressure fronts with wind and rain, can drastically alter carp behavior. These conditions often shift carp from surface cruising to heavy feeding. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and be ready to fish during these favourable conditions.
Handy apps like XC Weather are worth having installed, they can give you accurate weather reports and show when weather fronts are moving in and the pressures dropping.
Tip no. 3 - Always Carry Floaters
Floater fishing is one of the most enjoyable and effective methods for catching carp during summer. It might not always guarantee a catch, but being prepared with floaters increases your chances significantly. This visual and exciting fishing style requires specific tackle, such as dedicated floater line, controller floats, floating pellets or mixers, and ideally a specially designed floater / stalking rod.
Tip no. 4 - Stay Protected from the the sun
Sun protection is crucial for a comfortable and enjoyable fishing trip. Always wear sunscreen, stay hydrated, and consider wearing a bucket hat or baseball cap. Seek shade or shelter during the hottest parts of the day to avoid sunburn and heat exhaustion.

Tip no. 5 - Fish Safely in weedy lakes
Carp often seek refuge in weed during the day, so fishing in or near these areas can be productive. Use a light lead and braided main line to locate clear spots within the weeds. Feel the lead down to pinpoint these clearings, as they can be rewarding fishing spots.
If you do fish near weed then use the correct lead set-ups so you can fish safely, a set-up where the lead can easily eject is pivotal in fishing safely and you landing the fish. Our lead clips here or our fused lead clips here are a great way of fishing safely.
Tip no. 6 - Use Nuts & Particles
After spawning, carp may lose interest in boilies and prefer particles. A mix of hemp, corn, and tiger nuts (where allowed) can be more appealing. Prep these particles with a burco boiler, as carp love them. Regular feeding can prime and maintain fishing spots, increasing your chances of success.
Tip no. 7 - Margin Fishing
In deeper waters, carp often visit the edges on hot days, both day and night. With a stealthy approach and proper baiting, you can catch carp close to the bank. Carry a small bucket of varied bait like Betaine pellets or hemp and particles, and bait likely spots around the lake. Check these spots regularly and fish when you see signs of activity. Ensure all margin spots are safe and snag-free before fishing.
Tip no. 8 - Travel Light
Avoid carrying excessive gear in the summer heat. Traveling light makes it easier to move and follow active carp. Keep your gear minimal to maintain flexibility and responsiveness.

Tip no. 9 - Prioritize Carp Safety
Low oxygen levels in summer water mean carp should be retained for as little time as possible. If you need to retain them briefly, do so in the deepest water available. Wade out carefully and safely if necessary to minimize stress on the fish.
