Essential Winter Fishing Clothing Guide

Being comfortable and warm whilst fishing in winter is vital, so we've created the ultimate winter carp fishing clothing guide to help you make sure you're kitted out correctly and, most importantly, protected from the harsh winter weather.

The UK's unpredictable weather will always find a way to ruin anyone's day, and many anglers will concur that winter fishing is challenging enough without having to deal with the cold and rain! Despite the dip in temperature, you should not hibernate through the bleakest season of the year! Fishing can be fantastic in the winter, especially if you choose the right attire. This allows you to stay out on the bank for longer periods of time while remaining comfortable. Oh, and don't forget about the increased chances of catching that elusive snow carp.

What do carp anglers wear in the winter?

Trakker proudly designs and manufactures everything you need for winter carp fishing, from fishing waterproofs and suits to thermal socks and gloves. We’ve got you covered, literally!

Essentials every angler should have in their winter fishing wardrobe are:

  • Hats

  • Gloves

  • Hoodies & Jumpers

  • Jackets

  • Joggers & Trousers

  • Base Layer Set

  • Thermal Fishing Suit

  • Wellies (or a good set of boots)

  • Thermal Socks

Now that we’ve outlined what you need, the next step is knowing what each item does to help keep the elements at bay.

Thermal Fishing Suits

Trakker has been at the forefront of designing the best thermal fishing sets for many years and our "CR" or "Core" suits have stood the test of time and the weather! A thermal fishing suit usually consists of a heavy-weight fishing jacket and bib ‘n’ brace style trousers, keeping you protected from head to toe. Our CR suits come in two models: a 2-piece comprising of an insulated heavyweight jacket and trousers, and a more comprehensive 3-piece suit comprising of an insulated heavyweight jacket with a zip-in technical fleece and salopette-style trousers.

Some Key Benefits of our CR Winter Suits:

  • Teflon Waterproof Coating: Offers market-leading water repellence

  • Taped seams

  • Fleece-lined collars and hand-warmer pockets

  • Reinforced knee panels

  • Insulating materials to keep you warm on the coldest of days

Fishing Jackets

Another essential piece of clothing for your autumn and winter fishing trips is a good‑quality jacket; this will keep you dry, warm and comfortable when you’re out on the bank.

Trakker’s CR Thermal Jacket offers great insulating properties, making it an ideal jacket for layering up.

  • Constructed using a hard‑wearing honeycomb material for long‑life durability.

  • Fully insulated design to provide ultimate warmth and comfort even in the harshest conditions.

  • Fleece‑lined hand‑warmer pockets add an extra cosy touch.

  • Adjustable hood and hem help seal out the wind and maintain heat.

More technically advanced, the new Trakker TechPro Thermal Jacket brings high‑performance weather protection to serious anglers.

  • Fabric rated with a 10,000 mm hydrostatic head and fully taped seams to keep out water.

  • Features an innovative cross‑weave silver lining and a sherpa‑lined hood to boost heat retention and minimise heat loss.

Fishing Trousers & Joggers

A solid pair of thermal combats or fishing joggers is a must-have throughout the colder months. Not only do they help keep your lower half warm, but they’re also incredibly comfortable, ideal for long sessions on the bank. Look for trousers that combine insulation with durability, such as those lined with fleece and made from ripstop or heavyweight stretch fabrics. Reinforced panels on the knees and seat are also a great addition, especially for anglers who spend a lot of time kneeling or sitting on damp ground.

Joggers offer a more relaxed fit and casual comfort, making them a popular option for anglers who prefer softer, more flexible clothing without compromising warmth. Options made from heavyweight brushed-back fleece provide excellent insulation, while added features like zipped pockets and tapered ankles enhance practicality.

It’s also important to pack a reliable pair of waterproof overtrousers or shell pants. These come into their own when the weather turns wet or windy. Breathable, waterproof designs that match your jacket, like those in the TechPro range are ideal for layering over thermals, ensuring you stay warm and dry without overheating.

Whether you’re casting in the cold or tucked up under the brolly for a long winter session, the right lower layers make all the difference to your comfort and performance.

Fishing Hoodies

Hoodies are the perfect option for adding a middle layer to your clothing. Trakker’s hoodie selection offers both comfort and style while also adding additional warmth to your layering system. Hoodies sit as a nice mid-layer between your base layer set and your fishing jacket. We advise fishing jumpers with a hood; one of our favourites is the CR Logo hoodie in black and Trakker's bespoke camou pattern.

Fishing Base Layers

Many people believe that wearing their thickest coat will keep them warm throughout the winter; however, this isn't the case. Building multiple layers of clothes helps regulate your temperature. If you just wear your thickest coat and get too hot, if you take that off, you will become too cold. At least if you build layers up, you can remove or add layers, which stops you from sweating too much or feeling too cold.

Base layers are garments that are worn next to your skin and will act as a barrier, keeping the chilly air out and trapping warmth in. The Trakker Reax Base Layer Set comprises a half-zip top and bottoms, offering exceptional thermal properties but also being breathable, allowing perspiration to escape from the skin.

Imagine that you've been active during your session, that you've set up a swim on fish, and that you are now largely immobile. Without the right base layer, the sweat from your exercise will quickly cause your skin and your first layer of clothing to become cold and wet.

Fishing Socks, Gloves & Hats

It goes without saying that keeping your head, feet and hands warm is a must throughout winter; there’s simply nothing worse than cold hands and feet. It’s also proven that you can lose up to 10% of your body heat through your head, so it's vital to have a warm hat on. Trakker produces a variety of headwear designed to keep your heat warm in the colder months.

While gloves can be inconvenient, especially when tying rigs or doing fiddly tasks, they are essential during the winter months. There’s nothing worse than cold hands and then trying to tie a rig. Trakker has two gloves in the range specifically designed with the angler's needs in mind. The Polar Fold-back gloves are made from Polartec fleece material, which makes them really warm on a cold winter's day. Our Thermal Stretch Gloves are the newest addition to the range, made from water-resistant fabric and thermally insulated, perfectly suited for chilly weather!

Also, a good pair of socks like the Winter Merino Wool Socks will keep your feet warm and comfy throughout your session.

Boots

It goes without saying that a good set of walking boots is a must when you’re fishing through the colder months. Banks are largely wet, muddy and slippery in winter — so look for models that offer:

  • Reliable water resistance or full waterproofing

  • Strong ankle support and good sole‑grip

  • Sufficient insulation to keep your feet warm

Trakker TechPro Neoprene Boots

These boots are built to handle cold, wet sessions with serious durability and warmth. Features include:

  • Upper made of neoprene for insulation and comfort in all weather conditions.

  • Robust rubber lower section, keeping feet dry when wading muddy banks or walking wet ground.

  • High‑grip sole for traction on all surfaces — essential for bank‑side stability.

  • Practical details like a rear pull‑tag for ease of donning and a removal lug for quick take‑off.

Trakker TechPro Boots

If you’re after something more all‑round with insulation and weatherproof protection, the TechPro Boots are a strong choice. Key features:

  • Waterproof membrane that keeps feet dry even in wet conditions.

  • 3M Thinsulate lining for warmth without bulk — so you don’t compromise on comfort when you’re standing or moving for long stretches.

  • Reinforced toe and heel caps for added protection and durability when navigating uneven terrain.

  • Full Terrain Sole (FTS) for ultimate grip on mixed ground, from slick rocks to muddy tracks.

Tip: If you fish throughout the winter, pick boots that fit well with thick socks (or have built‑in insulation) and ensure your gait stays stable. A poor fit or weak sole can ruin a session. Also remember: dry boots are warm boots — after the session, air them out properly to maintain their waterproof membrane and insulation.

Summary:

While fishing in the winter can be challenging, there are plenty of opportunities and the banks are much quieter. Carp fishing in winter needs to be as comfortable as possible, so staying dry and warm is essential. Layering up and having the right clothing can make the difference between an enjoyable session and a horrid session. If you follow our advice, then you should be all set for your winter carp fishing sessions.
